The Office of the Sheriff has been imbedded in the culture and organization of American government since the founding of our nation. The office has roots that extend back into medieval times as well. The agency is in transition. It has continued to evolve from an appointed Sheriff with no deputies to assist to a Sheriff who had part time help to maintain a scaled down maximum security prison and performed executions to todays modern, progressive law enforcement agency.
We are continuing to update this section with interesting facts and articles, as they pertain to Wayne County. Please Follow the links on the following pages to learn more about where it all started. Unfortunately, as a simple fact of life, we are continuing to lose some of the great members who helped bring this agency into this modern era and they take with them their memories. We salute all of the members, past and present who devoted their lives to improve the quality of life in this county and make the citizens safe.
When these pages were first created, they were intended to be an informational link to the current Sheriff's Office. Over a period of time that focus has changed and it is now intended to preserve part of the history of a fast changing environment. The Museum of Wayne County History works hard to do the same and we wholeheartedly support their efforts.
Visitors are encouraged to check back often.
