Howard Baker, the
prisoner mentioned in the article had the dubious distinction of
being the first person from wayne County to be executed by
electrocution from Wayne County.
Baker and an
accomplice, Joseph E. Higgins were burglarizing Buckminsters and
Graves store in Wolcott when they were discovered by the night
policeman, Wm. DeGreff. The two killed DeGreff. The two
were notorious in the Eastern Ohio, Western New York, Northern
Pennsylvania area. Higgins was later captured in Warren PA and
Baker, aka Howard Miller, was captured in Binghampton, N.Y.
Baker was
convicted on December 16, 1919 and sent to Sing Sing on January 25,
1920 where he was to be electrocuted . Higgins was sent to
Elmira on February 23, 1920.
