This letter is addressed to Thomas Armstrong Esquire, sheriff of Seneca County, Wolcott. Mr Elias H. Ely was asking for payment from an execution given to Sheriff Armstrong for collection.

The Sheriff received much of his salary from collecting these fees and judgements, a practice that was changed by local law shortly before the turn of the century. The Sheriff does however, receieve fees for service and poundage, the proceeds are deliveded to the county treasurer. Note the date on the letters. Sheriff Armstrong is believed to be the first "Wayne County Sheriff ". |
